The Criminal Defense Lawyer as a Hero

''No. It's not the easiest time to make a lawyer a sympathetic character,'' admits Mr. Kelley, the producer and creator of ''The Practice,'' a new legal dramatic series beginning on ABC Tuesday night at 10 p.m.

Still, it must be mentioned here that Mr. Kelley -- the Orange County criminal defense lawyer of CBS's ''Chicago Hope'' and that network's formerly long-running ''Picket Fences,'' as well as a significant contributor to NBC's 1980's powerhouse ''L.A Law'' -- does not appear all that daunted by the prospect.

''We're not trying to sell lawyering as a profession,'' says the boyish-looking Mr. Kelley, during an interview in the studio building that Twentieth Century Fox Television is currently renovating for him. ''We're obviously hoping to create a group of lawyers that people will attach themselves to emotionally and care about.''
